Underground rock shows are not everyone’s cup of tea, but Boston-based pop-rock fusion band Walhalla is trying to change that. Wonderland is one of Allston’s most popular local music venues for college students in the area, particularly those attending Berklee. Describing itself as a “subterranean music garden,” the venue serves as a haven for Boston’s up and coming rock acts.
Walhalla’s set was a stand-out from the rest of the April 22nd set; while the other sets were more geared toward fans of hardcore rock, this Berklee-based powerhouse brought a gentler sound to the night that was hard to look away from. Founded and led by virtuoso guitarist Anika Mladineo, Walhalla consists of vocalist Victoria Xu, bassist June Redmer, Christopher Salinas on keys, and Chick Green standing in as drummer.
The highlight of their eight-song set was their cover of Bôa’s “Duvet,” not only because of the closeness to the original, but because the entire band seemed to be having the time of their lives. It’s clear that Walhalla not only loves what they do, but that they are good enough to keep doing it. It takes practice to play as synchronously as they do, but that practice has already begun to pay off.
