Interview: Micky James

1. What kind of environment & vibe do you attempt to set up in the studio?

I always try to let the vibe be very free and spontaneous when I’m writing or working in the

studio. I love when Michael Jackson told Quincy Jones that, “You need to get out of the song’s

way and leave the room so that god could walk in.

2. How’d you choose the name of your EP?

I’ve had that title sitting around for a few years. I would try and write songs around that lyric and

nothing seemed to work until about a year ago the title seemed to fit in perfectly with what I was

writing about. I’ve always thought that it was a strong title and it very much resonated with me.

When it came time to put the songs together for this EP, I thought that title felt the most

compelling.

3. Who are some of your musical influences?

Beck, David Bowie, The Cure, T.Rex, Arctic Monkeys

4. What’s your writing process like? (is it collaborative?)

The writing process eventually becomes collaborative but I usually write and demo the songs

myself before I bring it to anyone else to finish it.

5. What’s the best advice that you’ve been given as a musician?

For myself, the best advice I was given early on in my career was to never let anyone tell you

who or what to be. When you’re young you can be easily pulled in many directions which could

easily skew your perspective and drive you off the course with who you really are as an artist.

It’s difficult to embrace our most authentic selves but in the end it’s always the most rewarding.

6. If you could open for any artist, who would it be?

The Rolling Stones!

7. What’s your favorite song to perform? (could be yours or a cover)

My favorite of mine to perform out of the set is “Give It To Me Straight”.
