Boston-based “dog rock” band Women in Peril dropped their first single “Three Days (With This Damn Dog and You Still Aren’t Gonna Give Me a Cigarette)” on May 5th, shortly followed by their debut EP “Can I Hold You” on May 26th. From strong vocals to a unique sound from the addition of a trombonist, Women in Peril is not a band you want to miss.
Kicking off the EP with “Can I Hold You,” Women in Peril starts the EP off with an upbeat song that makes the listener want to get up and join a mosh pit. “Can I Hold You” leads into “Locks,” a heavier song featuring strong drums as Women in Peril’s lead vocalist repeats “I don’t think I’ll ever learn” as the song fades with an intense trombone solo. Next up on the EP is their debut single “Three Days (With This Damn Dog and You Still Aren’t Gonna Give Me a Cigarette.” Previously released on May 5th, this track is a definite fan favorite, already amassing over over 1,000 streams. Emphasizing on guitar, the instrumentals contrast the heavier lyrics as Women in Peril’s lead vocalist proclaims “Not off to a great start, You’re gonna break my heart, When you tell me you don’t want me.” As the bridge approaches the instrumentals reduce for added effect, picking back up for the outro as the lead vocalist repeats “I’m saying you don’t want me.” Next up is “Lifeline,” starting off with trombone, adding to Women in Peril’s signature sound. This track has already become prominently featured on fans’ instagram stories, gaining attention from Women in Peril’s lead vocalists repeated screams of “Can I, Can I, Please, Please, Please.” Fifth up on the EP is “Back To The Start,” another fan favorite among the Boston house show scene. This track builds throughout its three and a half minutes, leading up to its repeated chant of “I’m going back to the start,” showing off Women in Peril’s leading vocalist’s impressive range. Last up on the EP is “2048,” a bittersweet track that rounds off the entire project perfectly.
As a band, Women in Peril has impeccable chemistry amongst its members. Their lyrics paired with impressive instrumentals mesh together to create a unique sound that draws the listener in. Made up of six distinct tracks, “Can I Hold You” is a must-listen-to EP.
