Interview: Stop the Presses

Adriana: First question is can you tell me a little bit about each member of the band and their role within the group?
Liz: My name is Liz. I just recently joined as the low harmony vocals back in October. I found everyone on facebook haha which is literally a God sent because I reached out to Ali, I think we were already friends at one point and then I just saw she posted she’s looking for singers and when we met it was like “you want to come on tour?” And I'm like yeah! So this is my second tour with them. I'm so fucking blessed that they just took me in and wow were like family now. Me and Carol are the singers. Danny and Ali are the powerhouses, keys, guitar, and both vocals. Jack and Steve are just the best basses and drummers.
Jack: The actual best?
Liz: The actual best. It's just so refreshing to have everyone be so welcoming out of nowhere it's just really nice.
Carol: My name is Carol, I sing background vocals and I also do choreography. I help a little bit with social media too and we sell merch also so anybody anywhere can hit us up at the merch table and hangout with us.
Ali: We wear many hats
Carol: Yes we all do, driver sometimes right? We all do a little bit of everything.
Carol: I joined the band 5 years ago, also found Ali on facebook, bless you Mark Zukerberg. University where musicians connect. Its great, theses are my fucking people. We played a bunch of different bands together and I feel really lucky that I found them and they are also my best friends. Haha seriously.
Ali: My name is Ali Presses and this Stop the Presses is my baby. Danny and I started Stop the Presses back in 2010. Originally in Florida and then we moved to New York in 2015 and then we met up with these wonderful people like Carol said about 5 years ago and it's been wonderful. I guess my role in the band is kind of like tour manager, booking agent, song writer, and many hats, I wear many many hats. Social media as well um I do make the beanies when I do have them and video editor as well, just basically everything. As much as it needs to be done.
Danny: My name is Danny Presses. Stop the Presses is my baby. Stop the presses kind of came out of the ashes of a band that I had that Ali joined. Kind of the same thing but 13 years ago she reached out to us and was like “hey I sing and I also play keys” and I was like “great bring your keyboard”. That all kind of fell apart but the songwriting connection between Ali and I was really strong and it's kinda where all this stuff really came from, we worked really well together. So yeah dude I handle a lot of the logistics. Ali and I do all the musical direction together. I do the graphic design, everything you see is either my artwork or direction. We both have directed and edited the music videos that have come out this year. Were really good at finishing each others sandwiches, its kinda that thing, I think Ali and I do a really good job at seeing and understanding each others visionand then figuring out how to help each other and that has fucking been the real rock solid foundation. Like thank God it's good enough and people care.
Ali: We work really well together.
Steven: Steven I play bass.
Everyone: *laughs*
Liz: Straight to the point
Steven: 5 years ago a guy me and the drummer we were with on tour, when they moved out to New York they were friends and was like “hey you know rhythm section, we just played for him, and we hooked up and then just an intense fiery attachment love that's burning across the globe.
Jack: Jack. Drummers. Shy.
Carol: laughs
Liz: Awwww
Adriana: How did you choose your band name?
Jack: What he said
Adriana: How do you guys go about writing songs?
Ali: Danny and I sit there for way too long and go back and forth back and forth on songs. We demo them first on a computer at home with a drum pad, I try to pluck a bass as best as I can, and Danny will usually take over for me. I write my harmony ideas and then once we have the beginnings like ok this is coming together, we bring it first to Jack and Steve and they really help us flush out the rhythm section because we are not really section players. They almost have hits and stuff like that, we bring in the gals and I teach the gals some parts. Send them a two sectional and then it becomes–
Danny: As far as the birth of the song it kind of comes from everywhere. There's some stuff we're purposely trying to work on like a musical concept of where we will apply the lyrics to. Sometimes a line will come to one of our heads and we’ll be like “oh I want to share this with you. Im thinking about this weird ass idea” and then the other person would be like “oh I fucking love that.” Especially now since I've gotten older and better at it we will cycle through several demo processes where it will start off as a voice memo and then finally go onto the computer. We will replace tracks over and over again and then go ok. That's the right thing and it just fleshes out, it just kind of grows and grows. Especially with ' ‘Got It” like Ali was saying, being able to have really good rough ideas and bring it to these dudes and talking about it face to face for the last layers and arrangements is really good. We get to talk in person about what we're trying to do here and it's really cool.
Adriana: What do you feel sets your band apart from other bands in your genre?
Liz: I feel like no one is doing what we're doing and it's really cool like it's truly so cool. It shows what one of a kind band we are on that line up. I think it's all the variety, all the harmony, the fact that we were a six piece and were so dynamic, I love it. That's what I feel.
Steven: Were also better looking
Adriana: Always a plus
Adriana: What is next for your band?
Ali: Next for us is new music and touring. We just want to keep putting it out there, spreading our music around, get people dancing and grooving, and yeah hear something that's a little weird. It's not your average ska band that you think of.
Adriana: Do you have any albums out, if so what are they called and where can they be found?
Ali: ‘Got It’ was released in September of 2022. You can find that on StopThePressesMusic.com or on our bandcamp at Stop The Presses music. If you follow us on Instagram, Tiktok, or Facebook our link is in our bio. Spotify if you want to listen to it or scream it, apple music as well.
Danny: Anywhere you find music you can find Stop The Presses
