On only her second release, singer-songwriter Grace Enger has already secured a

permanent spot in this listener’s “On Repeat” playlist. Released on March 31st, “The Cut”

unfolds the raw emotion and grit of a breakup.

Enger’s storytelling abilities never fail to impress and this song is most certainly no

exception. She builds up the story over a guitar-heavy track, leaving the listener in awe. The song

starts off slow as Grace tells the tale of a couple taking a drive. She voices the inner monologue

of knowing a breakup is approaching, dreading the words about to be said. Enger goes over

every moment in her head as she tries to figure out just when a shift in the relationship was

established. She narrates the feeling of wanting the moment to be over and done with so she

doesn’t have to face the turmoil of the split.

Enger has an unmatchable talent when it comes to building the perfect bridge. As the

drums become more featured on the track, Grace builds into a powerful, scream-worthy chant

depicting her acknowledgment of the impending breakup. The lyrics “I know we’re Breaking,

Up the moment, Watch the motion, Picturing the credits roll in,” can only be rivaled by her

writing on her past release “The Neighborhood.” As the bridge comes to a close she immediately

drops back to a softer tone, the realization washing over her with the lyrics “You don’t have to

say it, I know the words.”

Between her ingenious songwriting skills and the recent announcement that she’s opening

for Maisie Peters on tour this summer, Grace Enger is certainly the next big thing.
